"Bad Apple!" is the 3rd episode of The Aquabats! Super Show! from Season 2.

Synopsis[]

The Aquabats must save Jimmy's mom when a giant worm swallows her during a visit to their farm.

Plot[]

(Contains Spoilers)

After a giant mutant "flea beetle" attacks Captain Turnip's Grocery Island, The Aquabats were told to get rid of that creature without making a mess. When Bob, Roberto and W. Machulis discovered the mess that The Aquabats made, they fired The Aquabats from Captain Turnip's Grocery Island. The Aquabats trace it to a nearby farm growing genetically enlarged produce, which happens to be run by Jimmy's estranged parents, the Goodmans. Tensions rise between Jimmy and his eccentric scientist father over Jimmy having abandoned his farm life, but when a gigantic mutant worm swallows Jimmy's mother, the two must work together to rescue her.

Characters[]

Cartoons[]

Origin Story[]

Jimmy explains his version of how he joined The Aquabats, being built to help on his families farm, leaving for the city to follow his dreams, and answering a newspaper ad for a band seeking a saxophone-playing robot. This segment utilizes clunky 1980s-style computer animation.

Lil' Bat Cartoon[]

Lil' Bat uses a tennis ball launcher to practice his serve, but the machine goes haywire. With the help of a cannon, Lil Bat turns the tables on the renegade machine.

Commercial[]

A commercial for Dirt Clod. It looks like a big rock, but it can do anything.

  • Hot Potato
  • Baseball
  • Secret Teller
  • Snack
  • Pillow
  • Bubble Bath (DIRT BATH!)

Music[]

"Open the Worm!"[]

The Bats sing a song to attract the giant worm that swallowed Jimmy's mom.

Trivia[]

Cultural References[]

  • The scene at the farm parodies a scene from the movie Star Wars, Episode IV: A New Hope in which the main character realizes Stormtroopers have attacked his home, as it's in ruins and no living thing survived. Jimmy's line before he starts running to the farm mirror's the main characters line, the line in Star Wars being "If they traced the robots here, they may have learned who they sold them to and that would lead them back... home!", and Jimmy's line being "Just outside of the town of Plainville, to a local farming community. But that means they would lead back... home!"
  • Before the scene where The Aquabats have lunch with Jimmy's parents, The MC Bat Commander asks Martha if she likes "Boogie Down Productions". No context was given other than "they're great", but they were a rap band which pioneered "Gangsta Rap" from 1986 to 1992.
    • Curiously, the English subtitles on the official YouTube upload mistakenly display The MC Bat Commander's line as "Do you like Cooking Down Productions?"
  • The ad Jimmy responds to reads "Do you want to make money for nothing, and your checks for free?" This is a reference to lyrics from the song "Money for Nothing" by Dire Straits. The video for the song was rendered using early CGI, and the animation in Jimmy's origin flashback deliberately has a similar primitive, blocky look.
  • The newspaper ad Jimmy answers in his flashback says to call the number 867-5309 and ask for Jenny, which references the signature song of one-hit-wonder Tommy Tutone.
  • The worm is based on the creatures known as Graboids from the Tremors movies. Graboids also live underground and track their prey via seismic activity (vibrations through the ground).

Aquabats Trivia[]

  • This is the 3rd time we see someone's life story of how they join The Aquabats.
  • They aren't named, but the punks who accost the band in Jimmy's origin cartoon are obviously based on The Sandfleas.
  • This is the 1st episode of Season 2 to have subtitles in English and Hindi. The 2nd was Kitty Litter.
  • The flea beetle was later seen hugging Jimmy the Robot in the "Previously... on The Aquabats! Super Show!" segment in the 4th episode of The Aquabats Super Kickstarter campaign.
  • The music for the "Previously... on The Aquabats! Super Show!" segment was later reused for the 8th episode of The Aquabats Super Kickstarter campaign.
  • The Hub logo was omitted in the remastered version.
